Wildfire, smoke exposure, human health, and environmental justice need to be integrated into forest restoration and management

This review in Current Environmental Health Reports mitigation efforts in forests were examined to determine ability to decrease the human harms from wildfires. Collaborative planning and a transdisciplinary approach were proposed to help reduce these health harms.

Asthma exacerbation due to climate change-induced wildfire smoke in the Western US

This article in Environmental Research Letters uses modeling to evaluate the smoke exposure and health burden of asthma exacerbation in the western United States. The highest rates would be seen in northwest with cost estimates over a billion dollars in one fire season.

2023

Health costs of wildfire smoke to rise under climate change

This brief communication in Climate and Atmospheric Science used a quantitative framework for fire risk assessment. Simulations were then carried out with different weather conditions to then relate the areas affected and severity of exposure with cost.

2021

The changing risk of burden of wildfire in the United States

This perspective from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looks at satellite imagery to further understand the effect of PM 2.5 from wildfires across the United States.

2019

Wildfire smoke exposure under climate change

The review in Current Opinions in Pulmonary Medicine literature is reviewed as to the effect of pulmonary health from wildfire smoke. Lung function, COPD, asthma and respiratory infection and combine outcomes are addressed based on several studies reviewed.

2020

Air pollution from wildfires and human health vulnerability in Alaskan communities under climate change

This study in Environmental Research Letters assessed PM 2.5 exposure in Alaska and estimated changes for future events with vulnerability evaluations for subpopulations.

2016

Particulate air pollution from wildfires in the Western US under climate change

This study in Climatic Change looked to create an interactive map with PM 2.5 estimates in combination with a fire prediction model. The goal is to assess current air quality changes, smoke patterns and from wildfires and estimate future impacts.

2024

Wildfires, Global Climate Change and Human Health

This special report in the NEJM ties climate change to increasing wildfires and then examines the health implication from these fires. Protection and mitigation from wildfire risk is also discussed.

2019

Health Effects of Climate Change-induced Wildfires and Heatwaves

This article in Cureus gives a background and review of climate change causing more intense fires and the costs and health hazards associated with them. Heatwaves and two case studies of the Woolsey and Camp fire are used to highlight these points.
